FAST1® Intraosseous Infusion System

Excellent Advancement in Pre-Hospital Care
“In early September 2006 my crew and I responded to a report of an 18 year old having a seizure. Upon our arrival we found that our patient was not having a seizure but was in cardiac arrest. Two bystanders were performing CPR and reported to us that the down time of the patient had been approximately 5-7 minutes.

The patient was pulseless and apneic with signs of cyanosis around the lips. While the monitor was being established and the defibrillator pads were being positioned I was able to place the FAST1®. My EMT handed me the flooded IO line with 1liter of NS infusing wide open. Through a series of medication administrations and defibrillations the patient was revived within 5-6 minutes of being on scene.

Over the last 2 years I have had the opportunity to use the FAST1® on multiple patients that required ALS interventions. I have found the FAST1® to be extremely effective and user friendly. It has been absolutely amazing how rapid venous access can be established. It is especially beneficial in patients that have cardiovascular compromised physiology, or a multitude of any other extreme medical emergencies that requires intravenous medicines and fluids.

The FAST1®has saved many lives and will save many more. This has been an excellent advancement in the pre-hospital care that we can provide to patients. Everyone benefits especially the people that we are caring for and treating.”

Volunteer Fire Fighter’s Life Saved
“The 52 year old male who is a Volunteer Fire Fighter with Friendswood Fire Department began feeling ill during the Fire Department’s Annual Fire Prevention Week Open House. Paramedic McCoy went into the dispatcher center and told fire fighters that he was having a squeezing sensation in his chest. During this time the primary ambulance crew was on a cardiac arrest and backup medics were called.

Several Friendswood Fire Fighter/Paramedics responded and found one of their own members in Ventricular Fibrillation. Paramedics defibrillated the patient several times successfully but the patient kept going back into Ventricular Fibrillation. The patient had poor vascular access and the paramedics elected to use the FAST1® to gain rapid vascular access to allow the patient to be given Anti-arrhythmic medications. The patient was given the Anti-arrhythmic medications and his heart returned to a stable rhythm. The patient regained consciousness en route to the hospital.

The Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department EMS Division began using the FAST1® in 2003 under the direction of Dr. C. David Hearn/Dr. Oscar Boultinghouse and has used this life saving device several times. The role of the Emergency Medical Services is ever changing, and the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department EMS Division wants to remain a leader in providing the most current and appropriate medical care to the public.”

The FAST1® Pulls Provider Out of a Jam
“I would like to talk ever so briefly about the FAST1® Intraosseous Infusion device. Our organization, EMS Med-flight is an air evacuation helicopter service based in Richmond, Virginia and was one of the services to pilot this device in the late 1990’s. We have placed over 40 of these devices and I am here to tell you no service should be without it. When time and venous access is imperative, the FAST1® can pull any provider out of a jam. Our quality assurance program has revealed that this device can be placed in an average of 54 seconds and any level of provider can place it effectively.

Our original plan for the FAST1® was quick access that would allow us to administer paralytics for intubations. This device, however, has proven to do much more. We have used it to administer all cardiac drugs and can be very helpful with fluid replacement. We have placed it in two conscious patients with little or no problems.

Our success rate in placing this device is 98% and we have had great luck with the flow rates and ability to work around this unit with CPR in progress.

I really don’t know how a department can handle the unexpected situations you come upon in a trauma call without this device to fall back on. Thank you for such a great product.”
